NBA is a place where players need to be in their top physical shape and strong mentality. On averages, each player requires to play 82 game schedules (not including pre-season, and playoffs games), and NBA player’s mentality and physical performance can wear down as the NBA season progress. Whether it is spending time traveling to opposing teams, back-to-back games, practice between games, recover from the game/practice, dealing with media, or recover from injury accumulate in their career, NBA players need to find a way to maintain top performance.

A younger player may find it easy to recover and stay in top shape for the next game. But the older player may find it hard to do so. The average age of an NBA player is 24.49 years, and the average active player on NBA is 26 years old. The average age of retirement for players is in the late 30s. So an active player in the late 30s is considered old in the NBA, and you may wonder, how can these players keep up with younger guys who come into the league each year.

Vince Carter at 43 was the oldest NBA player to play in a game during the 2019-2020 season, and LeBron James in his late 30s is leading the La Lakers for their second NBA title.

Oldest Active NBA Players

Before we list the oldest players ever in N let’s discuss the 17 oldest active players in the league today in 2020-21 season. These players either take a dominant role in leading their team or play a support role in the team to help out the younger players. Many of the players are starting out the 2020-21 season with great stats. Let’s go over who is the oldest player in NBA now.

1.Udonis Haslem

  • Age: 40 years, 232 days (Born on June 9, 1980)
  • Position: Forward/Center
  • Career 2002-present
  • Teams: Miami Heat (2003–present)

Udonis Haslem is the oldest active player at age 40 in the 2020-21 season.  Haslem played for Florida Gators during college basketball and became the key player of the team He was undrafted but signed with his hometown Miami Heat in 2003.  He stays with Heat from 2002 to the present.

Haslem won three NBA championships. In 2006, he played along with Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal. In 2012 and 2013, he played along with the big three (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh) and Ray Allen (in 2013) to take home the NBA champion.
Haslem is the oldest NBA player on the Miami Heat roster.

His playtime has significantly decreased for the past 4 seasons.  The Heat reached the 2020 NBA final against La Lakers, but they lost in game six.  Haslem only played 4 games during the 2019-20 season.

2. Andre Iguodala

Andre Iguodala is the second oldest active player in the NBA at age 37.  Andre starts his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers with the 9th overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft.  He joined with top player Allen Iverson from 2004 to 2012.  He was named the All-defensive 1st and 2nd team twice.

Andre won three NBA championships when he joined Golden State Warriors in 2013.  His aggressive play in defense and killer three points shot when the team needed, earned him a spot on the team.  He was named NBA final MVP in 2015 with 16.3 points and 52.1 % field goal percentage per game during 2015 NBA final games.

In the 2019-20 season, Andre’s team joined Heat in a support role.  He played alongside Jimmy Butler to challenge La Lakers in the 2020 NBA final.  They lost in a 4-2 series against La Lakers.

3. Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony (Melo) is the 3rd oldest player in the NBA at age 36. He is currently playing for Portland Trail Blazers. Carmelo played for Syracuse Orange in 2003 and helped his team won the national championship as a freshman.  He joined the 2003 NBA draft after his freshman year and became the 3rd overall pick by Denver Nuggets.

Carmelo joined NBA All-Star ten times, NBA scoring champion in 2013, and Olympic Gold medals in 2008, 2012, and 2016.
Carmelo average 23.4 points per game, with a career-high 62 points won against Charlotte Bobcats on January 24, 2014. He played for the Knicks for seven seasons. He helps the team won the first NBA playoff series.  Melo left Knicks after his crash with team president Phil Jackson in the 2017 off-season.

He later played for OKC and Rockets. After playing for Rockets for 10 games, Huston Rockets coached Mike D’antoni decided to trade Carmelo to Chicago Bulls.  Bulls later waived Carmelo, and he did not play in the NBA for 1 season.  Carmelo was disappointed with NBA that he struggles to find a team to sign him again.

In the 2019-20 season, Portland Trail Blazers gave him a second chance back on NBA.  Carmelo appreciates his second chance that he accepts his supporting role for Trail Blazers.  He only played 58 games with Portland in 2019-20, and he started all 58 games. He gained the respect of the team and Damian Lillard with 16.0 points per game, and season-high 32 points win over Detroit Pistons on February 23, 2020.  Carmelo resign for 1 year contract.

LeBron first played for the Cavaliers and joined up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.  He won his two NBA champion titles with Miami Heat. LeBron returned to the Cavaliers in 2014 and led the team to become NBA champion in 2016.
